“My birth mother was 15 when she had me, and did heroin while she was pregnant—I was born a heroin addict. My real mom—the one who adopted me before I was even born—told me that I screamed nonstop for the first six months because I was going through withdrawal. Now I have migraines every day, and the doctors think it’s hereditary and might have something to do with that situation. Two of my sons have it, too, and three of them are alcoholics.
“I’ve also had a lot of physical and verbal abuse from my ex-husband. He left me for dead for three days: I was in a coma, and nobody knew where I was. I can’t let go of things like that, but my philosophy is that I can’t hate someone for what they’ve done to me—that would mean that they win. And hate is such a heavy burden to carry.”
